The Classical Indian Mathematicians

Whenever we talk about Mathematics, the contribution of India is always considered as a benchmark. Let us take a look at some of the greatest Indian mathematicians who have changed the face of Mathematics around the world.

1. Aryabhatta (476-550 CE)

His major work i.e. Aryabhatiya, a compendium of mathematics and astronomy, was widely referred to in Indian mathematical literature and has survived to modern times. His main contributions covers arithmetic, algebra, plane trigonometry and spherical trigonometry, continued fractions, quadratic equations, sum of power series and table of sines.

2. Varahamihira (505-587 CE)

Varahamihira's main work is the book Pancha-Siddhantika on the five astronomical treatises. His work is a treatise on mathematical astronomy and it summarises five earlier treatises, namely Surya Siddhanta, Romaka Siddhanta, Paulisa Siddhanta, Vasishtha Siddhanta and Pitamaha Siddhanta. He was the first one to mention that the ayanamsa, or the shifting of the equinox is 50.32 seconds.

3. Yativrsabha (6th century)

Yativrsabha was a mathematician and a Jain monk, who wrote the book named Tiloyapannatti which describes cosmology from the point of view of Jain religion and philosophy. The work also gives various units for measuring distances and time. Tiloya Panatti postulated different concepts about infinity.

4. Brahmagupta (598-670 CE)

Brahmagupta gave the solution of the general linear equation in chapter eighteen of Brahmasphutasiddhanta. The current system of number system is based on the Hindu Arabic number system and first appeared in Brahmasphutasiddhanta. Brahmagupta gave the sum of the squares and cubes of the first n integers.

His book Brahmasphutasiddhanta is the first book that mentions zero as a number. He also contributed by formulating Pythagorean triples and gave a recurrence relation for generating solutions to certain instances of Pell's equation using the Euclidean algorithm. He also devised a formula for cyclic quadrilaterals. His work in different fields is just amazing and that is still a benchmark in today's world.

5. Bhaskara I (600-680 CE)

Bhaskara I was the first to write numbers in the Hindu decimal system with a circle for the zero, and gave a unique and remarkable  rational approximation of the sine function in his commentary on Aryabhatta's work.

This commentary, Aryabhatiyabhasya, written in 629 CE, is the oldest known prose work in Sanskrit on mathematics and astronomy. His astronomical works in the line of Aryabhatta's school, the Mahabhaskariya and the Laghubhaskariya are spectacular.

6. Sridhara (between 650-850 CE)

Sridhara was known for 2 treatises: Trisatika (written in three hundred shlokas) and the Patiganita. The book discusses counting of numbers, measures, natural numbers, multiplication, division, zero, squares, cubes, fraction, rule of three, interest-calculation, joint business or partnership and mensuration.

He wrote that "If zero is added to any number, the sum is the same number; if zero is subtracted from any number, the number remains unchanged; if zero is multiplied  by any number, the product is zero". He gave a rule for finding the volume of a sphere.

7. Mahavira (9th century CE)

Mahavira was a 9th century Jain mathematician from Bihar. He separated astrology from mathematics. He was the author of Ganita Sara Samgraha which revised the Brahmasphutasiddhanta. His work is a highly syncopated approach to algebra and the emphasis in much of his text is on developing the techniques necessary to solve algebriac problems. His contributions also include the concepts such as Equilateral, Isosceles Triangle, Rhombus, Circle and Semi-circle.

8. Pavuluri Mallana (11th century CE)

Pavuluri Mallana, the follower of Adikavi Nannaya, was a mathematician of the 11th century. He translated Ganitasara Samgraham, a mathematical treatise of Mahavira, into Telugu as Sara Sangraha Ganitamu. He also authored Bhadradri Rama Satakamu published by Vavilla Ramaswamy Sastrulu and sons in 1916

9. Hemachandra (1087-1172 CE)

Acharya Hemachandra was a Jain scholar, poet and polymath who wrote grammar, philosophy, prosody and contemporary history. He gained the title Kalikalasarvajna, the all knowing of the Kali Yuga. Hemachandra, following the earlier Gopala, presented an earlier version of the Fibonacci sequence, which was presented about fifty years before Fibonacci.

10. Bhaskara II (1114-1185 CE)

Bhaskara II was an Indian mathematician and astronomer, born in Bijapur in Karnataka. His works represent a spectacular contribution to mathematical and astronomical knowledge in the 12th century and he was also called the greatest mathematician of the medieval India.

He contributed a lot in the fields of mathematics including arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry and calculus. Bhaskara's work on calculus predates Newton and Leibniz by over half a millenium. He wrote the first work with full and systematic use of the decimal number system.

Bumrah, the hero!!

Yesterday was the 2nd T20 of the 3 match T20 International Series played between IND and ENG at Nagpur. IND started off steadily with the opening of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Virat Kohli dismissed off very early on 21 runs. Later, KL Rahul batted brilliantly by scoring 71 runs of just 47 balls, with some short partnerships with Manish Pandey who scored 30 runs. Rest, the whole team collapsed with less than 10 runs by their side. Nagpur wicket was proving very difficult to bat on, but still team IND managed to put 144/8 runs on the board.

ENG have already won the first T20I and it was a great chance for them to seal the series. They started off brilliantly with the partnership of Sam Billings and Jason Roy. But, Ashish Nehra dismissed both of them in the same over.

Later, partnership began by Joe Root and Ben Stokes. It was expected that ENG can win this match easily with the required rate of just 6+. But the 18th over by Jasprit Bumrah changed the face of the game. In that over he just conceded 3 runs. Nehra was asked to bowl the 19th over in which he dismissed Ben Stokes. But, Jos Buttler managed to score a 6 and a 4 off the last two balls of his over.

Just 8 runs were required to win off the last over, but Jasprit Bumrah bowled with such an accuracy that he dismissed Joe Root on the first ball. The next ball was faced by Moeen Ali, in which he scored a single. ENG needed now, 7 off 4 balls. Jos Buttler faced the next ball in which he missed with ENG needing 7 off 3 balls. Jos Buttler then was bowled by Bumrah on the next ball, with ENG needing 7 off 2 balls. Chris Jordan was missed the ball, but still ran for a single in the form of bye-run. Last ball was very crucial as ENG needed 6 runs. Moeen Ali was on strike, but Bumrah bowled a full length delivery which Moeen Ali failed to hit and IND won the match by just 5 runs.

This match was one of the greatest in India's T20 matches played so far. Hats off to Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled beautifully in the death overs!! He is the hero of this match with his brilliant spell of 2-20 in 4 overs with 14 dot balls. Nice to see Bumrah back in form once again!!

They ask that, if Sachin is God, then what is Virat Kohli ??

First of all, I appeal to everyone who support cricket that COMPARISON must be banished from such a game played with true sportsman spirit!!

Now, about this question, I can share my own views about Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Both these players are the STAR players of Indian cricket team. Sachin Tendulkar is the master blaster with almost every batting record on his name.

I don't need to mention his achievements on Quora, every cricket fan has witnessed and followed him due to his ability to score more and more runs and also every cricket fan follows him as a God of this game. Apart from this, Virat Kohli has a very different yet a unique instinct while he bats. He has managed to score runs at a consistent rate in all forms of cricket.

He has a very good quality of concentration towards the game and handle the pressure of the game easily. This is the only reason behind his success in even World cup level tournaments. He is emerging as threatening batsman giving nightmares to even star bowlers in international cricket.

Lastly, if Sachin is God of cricket then Virat is King of CRICKET!!
He is the GENIUS !!! no words to describe Virat.
VIRAT IS VIRAT..NAAM HI KAAFI HAI!!!!
(Just name is enough!!)

IND lost the 'Match' but Kedar won the 'Hearts'

Yesterday was the final ODI played between IND and ENG on the most iconic stadium of the world i.e. The Eden Gardens, Kolkata
IND won the toss and chose to bowl first. ENG started off very steadily but with a good run rate. Jason Roy continued his form and scored 65 runs off just 56 balls. Bairstow (56) and Ben Stokes (57*) also batted beautifully and helped their team to put 321 runs with the loss of 8 wickets on the scoreboard.

IND, as usual started badly with the openers Rahane and Rahul out for single-digit score. Captain Kohli batted under immense pressure and went on scoring 55 runs. It was expected that Virat Kohli could score another big innings and save team IND, but he was dismissed by Ben Stokes. Indian cricket fans were disappointed after he got out. But Yuvraj batted beautifully by scoring 45 runs. IND got hope when Yuvi and Mahi were on the crease, but after their dismissal, IND was seen in deep trouble with 173/5 in 31.4 overs.

But there was one man who gave a stand under tremendous pressure, he was none other than Kedar Jadhav. He batted excellently with Hardik Pandya. Both these batsmen settled and catalysed the innings run rate. But after the wicket of Hardik Pandya, it was critical situation for the team. Jadeja hit couple of boundaries before he got out. Ashwin also got out quickly.

Finally, the last over came with team IND needing 16 off 6 balls. Kedar Jadhav was on strike. Chris Woakes was bowling the final over. Kedar hit the first two balls for a 6 and a 4 respectively. IND had hopes that they will win. The next two balls were dot balls, with the scenario 6 off 2 balls. Under this pressure, with the asking rate demanding to hit a 6, Kedar Jadhav was gone for a strike, and he was eventually caught out by Sam Billings on 90 off just 75 balls

IND lost the match by just 5 runs and ended the ODI series with a 2-1 win margin.

Hats off to Kedar Jadhav for his remarkable contribution in the yesterday's game. I can also say that this was the one of the best fightback effort that I had ever seen so far without Virat Kohli batting till the end! Although the match was lost by team IND, but still Kedar Jadhav stole the hearts of millions of Cricket fans across the World!!!

Can Virat Kohli play consistently till the age of 40?

No doubt at all! Just like today, he can still play consistently for the next upcoming years. As he maintains his fitness today, he is more likely to maintain this fitness for the next upcoming years.
Just fitness is the matter of concern, rest this guy is awesome!
“ Form is temporary, but class is permanent "

Why are Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma not suitable for classic test match cricket?

Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh all are prominent T20 batsmen. They all are known mostly for their hitting and scoring runs at a good strike rate
Their ability to hit the ball hard is mainly suitable for limited overs Cricket. But when it comes to Test Cricket, all these batsmen fail to maintain their identity as a frontline batsmen.
I think that the main reasons behind this may be simply their technique. The way they hit the ball very hard does not fit completely for classic Test cricket
Test cricket is the most difficult format in International cricket as every player need to maintain a patience and also need to soak the pressure on and off the field for 5 days.
I think they must also need to concentrate on Test Cricket just as they take the limited overs cricket and it's a true fact that, a batsman who can perform well in test cricket is also likely to perform well in limited overs format.
