Social Reformers of Maharashtra

1. Vinoba Bhave (1895-1982)
  • Real name: Vinayaka Narahari Bhave
  • Well known for the Bhoodan Movement
  • Translated Bhagwad Gita into Marathi
  • He called "Kannada" script as the "Queen of World Scripts" (Vishwa Lipigala Raani)
  • He stated that "The Gita is my Life's Breath"
  • University named after him: Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh, Jharkhand
  • In 1958, he was the first recipient of the International Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.
  • Awards: Bharat Ratna (1983), Padmabhushan (1983)
