- India is a home to 130 crore people coming from different ethnicities, practicing different religions, speaking a multitude of languages and sharing a vast culture. Pilgrimage in India regardless of any specific religion is ethereal. Many places of pilgrimage in India portray the mixture of culture, tradition and spiritual sense that makes our Nation different from other Nations of the World.
- In this blogpost, I will share some information about few of those places of pilgrimage that are indeed the cornerstone of Indian cultural history and diversity. Today, I will discuss about the "Jyotirlingas".
- A Jyotirlinga or Jyotirlingam, is a devotional representation of the Supreme God Shiva. Jyoti means 'radiance' and lingam the 'Image or Sign' of Shiva; Jyotir Lingam thus means the Radiant Sign of The Almighty Shiva. There are twelve traditional Jyotirlinga shrines in India. These 12 Jyotirlingas are as follows:
1. Somnath (Gujarat)
2. Mallikarjuna (Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh)
3. Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh)
4. Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh)
5. Kedarnath (Uttarakhand)
6. Bhimashankar (Pune, Maharashtra)
7. Vishwanath Temple (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh)
8. Trymbakeshwar (Nashik, Maharashtra)
9. Baidyanath Temple (Deoghar, Jharkhand)
10. Nageshwara Jyotirlinga (Dwarka, Gujarat)
11. Rameshwar (Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu)
12. Ghrishneshwar Temple (Ellora, Aurangabad, Maharashtra)
