- Westerners have their forks, spoons and knives, and the East Asians have their chopsticks. Most Indians will say that in order to completely relish Indian food, one must eat with his/her hands. There is a philosophy behind this practice, which adds a tactile dimension to the eating process.
- Feed the senses, not just the stomach : food that tastes good, smells good, looks good and feels good. The idea is that one should be able to enjoy the process of eating by involving many senses as possible.
- The skin sends information to the brain about the texture and temperature of the food. In defence of the practice of eating with one's hands, it may be said that it forces people to wash their hands before and after meals. Importantly, your fingers are the only cutlery that will not be used by anyone else. No recycling is possible. Doesn't it make eating with the hands a much more personal experience
