What does 'Circus' mean?

  • The term 'Circus' comes from the Latin word for a ring or circle.
  • In ancient Rome it was the circular arena built for holding chariot and horse racing, gladiatorial combats and fight between wild beasts.
  • From these beginnings has come our circus of today, still with a ring, but with pleasant and happy things going on inside.
