some strange misnomers


  • Camphor balls do not contain camphor. They are made of naphthalene.
  • A Camel's hair brush is not made of Camel's hair. It is made up of squirrel fur.
  • A steel-jacketed bullet is not steel-jacketed. Its jacket is made of brass.
  • Shakespeare's Mid Summer Night's Dream does not take place in the Summer.(Its time is the spring: April 29 to May 1).
  • Bee sting is not the sting of bees. It is the first milk given by a cow after calving.
  • The duck hawk is not a hawk; it is a falcon.
  • The horned owl is not horned. Two tufts of feathers were mistaken for horns.
  • The Douglas fir, also known as the Douglas spruce, is neither a fir nor a spruce-but a pine tree!
